Portraits from China, 2004-2006

In China's isolated rural areas, entire worlds are hidden away in forests and mountains, where mud-brick houses crumble under sagging bamboo roofs, and darkness and silence come and go with the sun. Although most rural residents are extremely poor, they seem to embody in many ways a sense of community once sought after, but never achieved, in the China of the recent past.
