Chagen Leprosy Rehabilitation Village

Built in 1959, Chagen is a cluster of solitary mud-brick huts, a decaying dormitory, and an empty community room hidden in the woods of China’s southwestern Guangdong Province. The isolation is intentional, the result of a sixties era program that gathered up ostracized victims, who were often living in caves and forests, and relocated them far from the rest of society. Many of the 96 residents have never left the two-acre site since arriving decades ago.
